Newcastle Show

Cotton is very excited to announce a show in the beautiful Newcastle on Christmas Eve Eve.
AnnaLeisA will provide very solid support.
The plan is for an evening of music, and then we're all hitting the beach for night swim. A shark that was interviewed said human flesh is tastiest after it has rocked hard.

Check the SHOWS section for more details.

See you soon Newcastle xx

CONGRATULATIONS TO BEN!
Congratulations goes out to Ben Hillis of Nodding Dog Design for being shortlisted for the Desktop Create Awards 2010! Ben designed the  album cover for Cotton's latest album "Evil Versus People" and is well deserving of at least being acknowledged for this work.
Among many other amazing designs, Ben is admired by us all and obviously a few judges. Well Done!

NEWS, NEWS, NEWS

Apologies for the lack of updates. We will try to keep this page updated and relevant in the future.

Firstly, please officially welcome Luke "Light Noise" Price to the band. He was filling in on the drum kit for a little while there, and fit in so well we kept him.

Big plans and big shows are in the pipe-works, such as a show at the HiFi bar in Melbourne in September and heading back into the studio in Janurary 2012.
We will keep you posted.

Ciao, for now!

4/10/10

After some time out due to the arrival of a new Cotton member, Cotton is gearing up for a big year in 2011. But before we get too carried away thinking about a new year, we'll be seeing the year out with one last Espy show and a trip to Newcastle for a very special "Cotton & Friends" christmas show!

Over the coming months we'll be announcing some big new year shows in both VIC and NSW, so stay tuned for more!

MARTY, YOU'RE OUT...

After 8 years, dozens of drum sticks, and hundreds of sweaty shirts Martin Marty Paget is hanging up his Cotton Sidewalk boots.
Marty joined the band in 2002. His first appearance was at a club in Muswellbrook, NSW when he jumped on the skins for a new song, at the time called Mass Transit Radio. It was so terrible, the rest of the band thought it a good idea to ask Marty if he'd join the band. From memory, Marty's first official show was at SJ's Hotel on Beaumont St, Hamilton (Newcastle) at the Mass Transit Radio album launch. It was great. There were many amazing gigs and good times, one of the best would be our first gig at The Cambridge Hotel in Newcastle, in the front bar. A little nervous, the first few songs were pretty uptight, but something happened during that set - we learned something about how to rock hard. I remember feeling like a punk rock band, as we proceeded to blast the very intimate crowd's hearing to shreds. Every show after that Michael Carroll would near head-bang his head off his neck.
We had so much fun playing back then, it didn't really matter how good the music sounded, to us, as long as we danced and performed as hard as possible, we were happy.
This is the first time a 'press release' of any kind has ever been done for a departing member of Cotton Sidewalk. Maybe it's because I have always hated the business/A Current Affair side of music. Or, perhaps this announcement is being made because Marty is more important than any other member preceding him. Or, maybe I am just lazy. Isn't somebody else supposed to do this news/gossip stuff?
Cotton Sidewalk, with Marty's blessing, will search for a new drummer and will continue making music, and performing as hard as a band can.
Thank you Mr. Paget, for the memories, the lessons learned and helping us all realise that playing music is one of the best things, ever.
Prof. Martin Paget

For all the members whom departed from the band before Marty, and received nothing, here is a tribute to you:
COTTON SIDEWALK FAMILY HISTORY
1999 - David 'Davus' Carroll, Brendan 'Lawsy' Laws and Adam Price form a band with no name and perform at school, playing covers of bogan rock bands.
2000 - At big school, they audition for the annual battle of the bands, and fail to impress the judges. Not long after this, Lawsy leaves the band (either he retired, or got kicked out. If he was kicked out I don't think we had the guts to tell him. Sorry Lawsy).
2001 - A very socially and musically busy year. Davus and Adam meet lots of new people and friends, one of them Matthew 'Wardy' Ward joins the band (I can't remember if we had a name at this stage, but at some time in this year Davus invented the name Cotton Sidewalk). Enter Damon Pieterse, and "big red" keyboards.
Battle of the bands approaches, and Cotton Sidewalk enter. Wardy, (I think) was at a basketball camp and, because he could, Damon filled in on bass. Cotton Sidewalk wins BOB. At some stage after Wardy is fired from the band (unfortunately suffering a similar fate to Lawsy, in that we didn't have the guts to tell him to his face. Sorry Matt).
2002 - Michael Carroll joins the band. The band wins some band comps. Later in this year Damon moved to Sydney. This proved to be too difficult for the band to function properly with him 2 hours drive away. Davus and Adam drive to Sydney to inform Damon that it's not working (Damon was properly fired from the band, but it didn't make it any nicer. Sorry Damo).
2002 was also the year Cotton Sidewalk's first album was recorded and released, "Mass Transit Radio". Renee Price formed the keyboard arm of voltron, and come the album launch at SJ's Marty Paget made his debut.
The band didn't lose a member for a while after that.
2005 - Stephen Bourke joins for a brief period as 3rd guitarist/tambourinist. Then realising his band Energy Town rocked way harder, left to lead them to punk heritage.
2006 - Cotton Sidewalk release mini-album "Build A Prechool".
2007 - Co-founding member Davus Carroll leaves the band.
July 2007 - 3rd album begins production.
2008 - Michael "105" Carroll says farewell. Cotton Sidewalk leaves its home of Newcastle and relocates to Melbourne, Australia. Heather Price joins the band. Renee Price heads back to Newcastle, essentially leaving the band.
2009 - "Evil Versus People" is completed and released in December. Marty, Heather and Adam are joined for the album tour by Renee Price and Michael 'Sullo' Sullivan. Sullo is baptised and initiated as band member.
2010 - Marty leaves the band.

Now I feel these matters are up to date. If anybody leaves, or is fired in the future I will endeavour to announce this as soon as possible.

Thanks for reading. Much love to Lawsy, Matt, Damon, Steve, Davus, Mick, Renee, and Marty.
Much love to all.
Adam

Wow Cotton Sidewalk

With all the bands I shoot each year it takes a bit to impress me but bloody hell on Saturday I saw one band that did impress and greatly.

Cotton Sidewalk came unknown, I'd never even heard of them but thought I would head to the Evelyn to see what they would be like at their album launch.

Not only are they very tight but also have a great and unique sound, what's more impress was the stage presence. For some reason all gels had been removed from the lights giving just the harshest of white lights, it was like shooting in a school hall but that didn't seem to matter as the band controlled the stage like seasoned veterans.

On leaving the venue I felt compelled to buy their album, Evil Versus People, and this didn't fail to deliver either ... it's now on high rotation.

If you only see a few bands this year make sure Cotton Sidewalk is one of them, they leave you wanting more.
